Gyasi Bourne BASc. — Creative Director

Gyasi (that's "Jaw-see") is a graduate from the University of British Columbia’s Mechanical Engineering program. He enjoyed a 10-year career in the world of medical device research and development where he honed his design skills, increased his technical savvy and learned the art of project management. He spent the latter half of his career directing the engineering department of a Vancouver-based stent development company. Gyasi became increasingly interested in the other dimensions of the healthcare industry and wanted to broaden his involvement. When he joined Canister Creative in 2006, he was instrumental in developing Canister’s mandate: to provide communication design to a variety of organizations with a focus on the health sector.

Laurel Swenson BFA, MGDC — Art Director

Laurel loves the challenge of balancing business goals with creativity. She has designed for the music and film industries; for arts, culture and non-profit organizations; and for business and corporate realms. Laurel’s life-long personal interest in health, nutrition and active living has naturally led her to focus her talents and energies on contributing to and working with organizations in the health sector. She is a Professional Member (MGDC) of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada and has practiced as a graphic designer since 1995 by working with several local design firms before founding Canister Creative in 2000. Laurel’s education in Critical Studies and Communications at Simon Fraser University helped her build a foundation of sensible and effective communication strategies.

Laurel brings depth to her graphic design by maintaining an active art practice of illustration, painting and study of colour and form. Digital video-making has also been a creative outlet where Laurel has developed her aesthetic and delighted international film festival audiences with her eclectic short works. She has been the recipient of grants and awards for her work from the BC Arts Council, the NFB and the Canada Council for the Arts.
